DIY Live Edge Mantel

So, picture this: me, chainsaw strapped to my trusty four-wheeler, venturing deep into the woods in search of the perfect log for my fireplace mantel. Amongst the large oaks and the occasional patch of poison ivy, I came upon a fallen giant that caught my eye. With tape measure in hand, I carefully assessed its size and condition, knowing that this could be the one.

After some deliberation, I decided to roll up my sleeves and tackle the fallen oak tree. Despite a few bumps along the way, like wrestling with poison ivy, I was determined to salvage this awesome log. With minimal rot and a solid structure, it seemed like the perfect candidate for my mantel project. Plus, its rugged charm had me envisioning a mantel with a bit of rustic flair.

With the log selected, it was time to fire up the chainsaw mill and get to work. I carefully positioned the log and began the milling process, aiming to achieve a level cut and preserve the natural beauty of the wood. Despite a few challenges, like navigating around knots and uneven surfaces, I powered through, knowing that the end result would be worth it.

As the sawdust settled, I stepped back to admire the freshly milled pieces of wood. It was time to transform them into a functional mantel. With precision and patience, I measured, drilled, and sanded, ensuring a perfect fit and a smooth finish. The live edge design I had envisioned began to take shape, adding a touch of rustic charm to the mantel.

With the mantel crafted and mounted securely to the wall, it was time for the finishing touches. I installed black pipe brackets for added support and stability, ensuring that my creation would stand the test of time. A few coats of finish brought out the natural beauty of the wood, enhancing its grain and texture.

Crafting a wood stove mantel from timber is a labor of love that requires patience, perseverance, and a bit of elbow grease. From selecting the right log to milling, crafting, and installing the final piece, each step of the process is an adventure in itself. As I sit back and admire my handiwork, I'm reminded of the beauty and resilience of nature, and the joy of bringing a piece of the forest into my home.
