Hey everyone, welcome back to the final episode of my porch build series. Today, I'll be sharing the completion of this project, leaving out only the part about the steel on the roof, which I'll cover in a future episode when I start putting the steel up on the house. I hope you've enjoyed this journey with me, and I'm excited to show you the finished porch.
As I started my day, the goal was to complete the porch, and I was determined to get it all done. However, even with experience, mistakes can happen. I realized that my measurements were a bit off on one side of the porch. Rather than panicking, I embraced the hiccup and decided to adjust accordingly. Instead of patching it up, I dropped the board down and planned to trim an inch off the bottom. It's all about adapting to challenges, even for someone who's been at this for a while.
With the skid-steer bringing over the plywood, I decked the porch, ensuring a solid foundation. To protect it until the metal roofing is installed, I laid down synthetic roofing felt. This not only adds an extra layer of grip during the metal installation but also keeps everything dry. Dealing with warped fascia boards, I shared a quick tip involving template boards to ensure a straight and clean finish.
Reflecting on the design process, I wanted to share some considerations for those planning their own house projects. The positioning of your house and porch should take into account the path of the sun. Spending time on the property, observing where the sun rises and sets, helped me decide on the orientation. For instance, I aimed to get sunlight into the house during winter but minimize direct exposure during the summer. It's these little details that make a home design more personalized and functional.
After successfully completing the porch, I added a synthetic paper that's approved for steel, anticipating that it might be a while before the metal roofing is installed. This allowed me to get a good grip during the installation and keep everything protected.
In the next episode, I'll break down the costs of this post-and-beam porch, providing you with insights into the expenses and a rough estimate per linear foot. I believe in transparency, and I hope this breakdown will be useful for those considering a similar project.
As I stand here, completing this porch brings a sense of accomplishment. My goal for this channel is to be a resource for those looking to embark on their DIY projects or house builds. I started from scratch, learning through trial and error, and if I can do it, so can you. Whether it's a bathroom remodel or a full house build, the rewards are not just financial but also deeply satisfying.
So, for all you DIY enthusiasts out there, keep learning, keep building, and never be afraid to try something new. Your dream project might be just a few projects away. Stay tuned for more updates on my journey and, as always, happy building!
