Hey there, fellow builders! Today, I want to take you through the latest chapter of my roofing adventure. I've been working tirelessly to get the Northside of my porch all set up, so let me fill you in on the progress.
So, the game plan was to tackle the roof above the porch, making sure to beat the afternoon sun. This way, I could get it done before any unexpected snow or ice came along. With all the trim and metal in place, it was time to dive into the metal roofing and, hopefully, finish the task by the end of the day.
The real challenge came in when I had to navigate around the numerous windows. Cutting and adjusting the metal to fit seamlessly around them took some time, but I'm thrilled with the outcome. The top trim, with a two-inch overhang from the window, not only adds a nice aesthetic touch but also ensures proper water runoff.
Now, let's talk about the corners and potential weak points. I've implemented a multi-layered approach to waterproofing. From rubber window seal tape to custom flashings and trims, I've created a robust defense against water infiltration. Even the tricky rib alignment was solved with a clever custom piece.
As I progressed, I encountered challenges with one of the ribs, but a strategically placed additional piece and some caulking provided a solid solution. It's all about adapting and finding the right approach, even if it means crafting a custom fix.
Now, onto the porch section. I carefully measured and cut the metal, keeping in mind the importance of accurate dimensions. The meticulous process involved marking, measuring, and cutting, ensuring a perfect fit around each corner.
For maintaining screw alignment, I shared a nifty trick. Instead of pre-punching the steel, I used a level to create straight lines for precise screw placement. It might not be the conventional method, but it worked like a charm for me.
Moving to the peak above the A-frame, measuring and cutting became an intricate dance. I demonstrated how to calculate measurements for a seamless fit, providing reference points for a foolproof process.
Next up, the essential task of bending the edge of the steel after cutting a rib. Using a pair of basic benders, I achieved the desired result, preventing any potential water seepage.
The process of installing ridge trim followed, with careful attention to details. I utilized reverse J-trim and made sure to achieve a neat, finished look by bending the edges over an inch.
Finally, after an intense day of work, all the steel above the porch is in place. The meticulous effort around the windows paid off, and the overall look is starting to take shape. While it took longer than expected, I'm satisfied with the progress.
Looking ahead, my focus shifts to the metal underneath the porch and ordering a couple of trim pieces for the peak. And, exciting news—I've connected with a spray foam expert for an upcoming project. If you have any burning questions about spray foam insulation, drop them in the comments or reach out on Instagram. I'll make sure to cover them in the upcoming Q&A with the spray foam pro.
Thanks for joining me on this roofing journey, and stay tuned for more updates on the garage project. Until next time, happy building!
